No, not Jameis…..Another one.

And I promise, with my next article I will preview The Indians for the upcoming year. Not sure why, but I’m a little more excited about baseball season this year. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about today.
Today is something that I probably could have saved for Going Green with myself and Veair (shameless plug) but I wanted to get a little more into it than just a few sentences. And if you haven’t read Going Green yet, please do!!

I want to talk about E. J. Manuel. I don’t think he’s gotten a fair shake in Buffalo. Yes, he has been dreadfully awful and he’s been injured, but I still don’t think he’s gotten enough time to show us what he can do. He has played a total of 15 games in the NFL. 15. Not even a full season. And he’s trying to get his starting job back. When, in my mind, it shouldn’t be a question. He was the Bills first round pick in 2013. Granted there have been some changes since he was drafted, but still he was drafted to (hopefully) be the Bills QB for the future. But they bring in Matt Cassel? For competition purposes? Again, why? As of now, before anyone has even started the offseason training programs, Rotoworld has Cassel ahead of him on the depth chart. I realize that Rotoworld isn’t the gospel, but why should anyone be ahead of him.
So, then I started to think. Maybe he does really just suck. These people around him are professionals. After all, I am a mere writer/observer from afar. However, I decided to check out Blake Bortles stats. I figured that they would be slightly similar. And lo and behold, they are! Blake has played in 14 games, EJ 15. I was really interested in the INTs, Blake threw 17 last year. EJ only has 12. They’ve thrown for roughly the same amount of yards and had pretty much the same attempts. Their completion percentages are essentially the same. EJ’s passer rating is higher however. So, EJ’s numbers are very similar to a rookie. Which I have no problem with, since essentially, he still is a rookie.
The thought is that EJ has had time to learn and study under Orton, and that’s a good thing. Hopefully with Rex Ryan’s vision, and a good QB Coach and offensive coordinator, we can see EJ’s emergence as the QB at least I (and hopefully at least some the Bills Mafia) think he can be. Having LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins there should help. I just really want to see him do well. I don’t think he’s been given enough time. I hope under Rex’s system he’ll be able to develop.
But then I think of Geno and the Jets, and I get sad again. Oh well….
